But Movember is actually more than just a month-long moustache-growing event; it’s a movement dedicated to changing the face of men’s health. The History of Movember:
Movember started in 2003 in Australia with just 30 men growing moustaches to raise awareness for men’s health issues. The Movement has grown globally, with millions participating and raising funds for critical health projects.
Why Men’s Health Matters:
Men's health matters because men often face unique health challenges, including higher rates of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and heart disease, as well as a higher likelihood of avoiding medical check-ups. Additionally, societal expectations can make it harder for men to seek help for mental health struggles, contributing to concerning rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide. For example:
Mental Health: The rate of male suicide is alarmingly high with 3 out of 4 suicides in Australia being men. Globally, on average, 1 man dies by suicide every minute of every day. Talking about mental health can be difficult, men are less likely to get the help they need. Movember looks at mental health through a male lens, focusing on prevention, early intervention and health promotion.
Prostate Cancer: Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in Australia. Globally, more than 1.4 million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Across the country, there are more than 240,000 men living with and beyond the disease. Many are dealing with serious side effects from treatment. Early detection and treatment can lead to successful outcomes. Regular screenings and being aware of the risk factors and symptoms are crucial steps in managing your health.
Testicular Cancer: Testicular cancer strikes young. It’s the most common cancer in young Australian men. At greater than 95%, the odds of survival for men with testicular cancer are better than good but for some men, long-term treatment-related side effects, mean quality of life is severely compromised. Early detection of testicular cancer is vital for successful outcomes.
